Dementia in Zimbabwe
Promoting Awareness of Dementia in Zimbabwe: A Call to Action
Dementia is a global health challenge that affects millions of people, yet it often goes unrecognised and misunderstood, particularly in developing countries like Zimbabwe. Raising awareness about dementia is crucial for providing better support and care to those affected and their families. This blog aims to shed light on the importance of dementia awareness in Zimbabwe, the challenges faced, and how we can collectively address this issue.
I recently watched a moving video on YouTube (https://lnkd.in/eZt42ajq) about dementia in rural Zimbabwe, revealing the desperate need for awareness and compassion. Dementia, affecting memory, thinking, and behaviour, is largely misunderstood in these areas. Many, like 98-year-old Mbuya Manyoka, are unjustly labelled as witches and live in isolation. Under her niece’s care, she often wanders at night, lost and alone.
The responses I received on LinkedIn showed a strong need to promote awareness of dementia back home. Almost every family in Zimbabwe has encountered a family member with dementia. Sadly, a lack of knowledge had us looking in the wrong direction for answers. We will share some of these heart-wrenching stories on this blog, ensuring the identities of the individuals remain anonymous.
